Joyce Mills teaches the Wednesday night Vinyasa Yoga class, 6:30-8:00 pm. This multi-level vinyasa yoga class flows sequences of movements paired with breath to integrate mind and body in classes created for specific purposes always honoring the needs of individuals who take class. Options are always available and students are encouraged to listen to their bodies in making asana variation choices. The goal is for students to systematically work the entire body in a non-judgmental environment, ending class feeling calm, centered, relaxed and rejuvenated. New students are always welcome!
Joyce Mills has recently completed the 1000 + hours of teaching to become a Yoga Alliance Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (Multi-style) at the 200 hour level. In addition to meeting the standards to become a RYT, E-RYTs have significant teaching experience (at least 2 years and a minimum of 1,000 hours of teaching experience after becoming an RYT at the 200 hour level). E-RYTs are qualified to train teachers at the corresponding level as well as to conduct Continuing Education Training. “I consider the E-RYT 200 as proof to the people I am blessed to teach that my intention is truly about them. I always encourage students to share with me how the class experience felt to them-what seemed to work and what did not. I am deeply appreciative of the insights students have shared with me over the years and consider the students and the information shared to be a gift and an opportunity to grow professionally.”
Teaching yoga has been a natural progression blending major career interests that have evolved over time. Joyce developed a profound appreciation of the immense physical, mental and emotional benefits of relaxation and meditation while doing experimental-clinical psychology research to treat the misery caused by stress and anxiety. Experience as a psychological examiner evaluating children and adults with learning issues led to an appreciation of how important multi-sensory input is to most people and how much can be accomplished when each person’s unique qualities are valued. Joyce has also worked doing research and writing in the wellness area for nearly twenty years, co-authoring Well Wise Ways with her husband, Dr Harry Mills. She describes teaching yoga in a rehabilitation center to have been particularly inspirational. “It is always amazing to observe how much individuals are able to improve their overall well being through their yoga practice and how much there always is that is still possible to do in spite of challenges.” Work in the fitness industry, especially teaching older adults has greatly reinforced the idea that exercising the body and mind never ceases to be beneficial and that life always has special opportunities if we were are open to receive them.
